Of course, such work is simple and does not require high qualifications, but it is necessary to have instructions for this position because most of them are either quite old, or young and inexperienced people.
The job description of the janitor must indicate the specific working conditions at this enterprise. This is the time of the beginning and end of work, breaks, work of the dining room, shower, so that the employee can plan his work according to time and place, it is also necessary to indicate to him premises that are closed for visits, roads, etc.
Core job responsibilities
The main labor function of the janitor is the maintenance of the territory entrusted to him. The instructions should clearly spell out the responsibilities for cleaning the local area or other areas at different times of the year with the obligatory indication of when the work should be done and with what equipment.
The components of this work:
- cleaning of garbage, fallen leaves and twigs;
- snow removal: raking and warehousing in a specific place, clearing paths, recreation places, parking lots and other places;
- chipping ice from the porch, ice from the footpaths, sprinkling them with sand to prevent people from falling;
- green planting care (if there is no landscaper in the state): watering trees, shrubs, grass and flowers, mowing and trimming grass if necessary, mowing lawns and more.
The types of work that the janitor should not perform may be indicated. This loading and unloading, snow removal from the roofs, the work of the watchman, joiner, electrician, painter and others, not included in the list of cleaning and maintenance of the territory.

Inventory and place of storage
The janitor's working equipment may include:
- rake;

Responsibilities During Extraordinary Circumstances
These circumstances may include:
- fire in the territory entrusted, in the building or in the neighborhood;
- penetration into the territory of persons with incomprehensible intentions;
- gas leaks from obscure or known sources;
- spills of water or other liquids of unknown origin;
- the appearance of foreign objects, piles of rubbish of unknown origin or other objects that had not been on the site before;
- failures in the soil or a sharp incomprehensible death of trees and grass in a serviced area;
- the sudden appearance of harmful animals or insects (mice, rats, cockroaches, or some other);
- the formation of large snow deposits on the roof in winter, which can threaten pedestrians, cars, etc.
The employee is obliged to urgently report all these events to the employee controlling him and to follow all his instructions if they are included in the duties of the janitor.
In case of fire, the janitor must act in accordance with the fire prevention instructions of the enterprise whose territory is being cleaned.
Rights to be specified in the job description
A large number of duties implies the presence of rights for the employee, including the janitor.
These rights must be noted in the job description.
The main right of the janitor is the opportunity to ask his boss for the solution of emerging issues and not to start work if he does not receive an answer on his question.
He has the right not to start work in the absence of overalls, faulty equipment, or in case of extraordinary circumstances.
The janitor has the right to earlier departure from work if a lot of hard physical work, for example, during heavy snowfalls or when ice is chipped, has the right to frequent breaks in work to warm up on cold and windy days.
He has all the rights as a member of the work collective: to receive rewards for his good and overtime work, for the good work of the whole team, for work not included in the job description.
