Headings

The main key to success at work is to be aware of the goals of the company, and not just know what to do.

Successful people perceive the situation as a whole. They move forward because they know how to make the best possible impact - on their team, on their organization, and even on the world. This is easier than it sounds.

It doesn’t matter if you work in the sales, hiring or any other services department. Marta Delehanti, Verizon Senior Vice President of Human Resources, said: “Establishing a relationship with the company's goal and how it makes money, a very clear understanding of this is probably one of the most important keys to success.”

Scientifically

Scientific research confirms Martha Delehanti’s observations. For example, a 2014 study by the Harvard Business School showed that university canteen employees were more likely to serve students, and students were more satisfied when employees and students were more able to see each other than when they did not see each other. A 2007 study by the University of Michigan found that university call center staff worked better when they met with fellows for whom they were trying to raise funds.

In both cases, employees seemed motivated by the tangible results of their efforts. One of the authors of the canteen survey told Harvard Business Review about the results. “Think of working in the office when your head is not working, you just work with papers all the time, and you are separated from the client,” says Ryan Buell, professor at HBS. “If suddenly the recipient of your work becomes visible, this can change your perception of the work.”

Understanding your daily goals can also help you succeed in the long run. In particular, you can answer questions such as

  • Where is value created?
  • What elements of this business contribute to its development?
  • What things can be automated or run into a problem?

When you understand well how your business and industry are developing, you will know what skills you need to develop in order to stay in trend.

Start by asking how your work relates to your supervisor’s work.

When it comes to establishing links between your work and the goal of your business, you can’t start small. The first step is to determine how your work is related to the work of your manager, which is the most important thing for him. Maybe it's announced watches or contacts with new customers. Whatever the answer, it can help you “see how exactly you and your team fit into the big picture.”

The best way to gather this information is to simply ask your boss what his priorities are. Libby Leffler, a former employee of Google and Facebook, advises new employees to check whether their goals are consistent with the goals of their manager, saying: "I think that is what we should focus on in the next few months. Do these goals meet your expectations in that direction which, in your opinion, should we take? "

Communication is a key success factor in any business.

You can also audit your time management to make sure your daily tasks are most effective. Justin Angsuvat, a former HR director at Google, said that “the best way to impress your boss is to show him that you can prioritize important things and then do them well.” As you progress through your organization, thinking through these questions can help you determine your next steps.

Awareness of the goal can mean the difference between simply tolerating your work and actually loving it. A goal has always been an important thing for employees. But Martha Delehanti believes that today is more important than ever.
